Proceedings:
A quorum was present. Andrea called the meeting to order at 5:45pm.

Meeting Minutes:
The December 7, 2011 minutes were distributed. Mary Helen motioned to approve minutes. Jerry seconded. The minutes were approved unanimously.

Treasurer’s Report:
The Treasurer’s Report was read by Mary Helen. The report was filed for audit. Mary Helen raised the Board’s awareness of $600 encumbered for 2 donors’ tiles yet to be engraved or installed. Discussed and tabled for a later meeting.

Director’s Report:
The new HEEC website http://ecoheec.com is new and improved. Lauren has added a “Thank You” link to sponsors and volunteers. She has also begun a library blog. Check it out at librarycolumn.blog.com.

Lauren gave the Board prior notice on two upcoming requests for HEEC support--Earth Week entertainment and the fresh & saltwater aquarium overhaul. She estimates the cost for Earth Week entertainment to be in the $300-350 range. The fresh & saltwater aquarium is literally dead in the water and badly in need of an overhaul to allow it to support life. Lauren will be gathering information and expert estimates. She estimates that the work needed will not exceed $1600. Both items will be tabled as more information is needed for a vote.

Old Business:
Good Search has earned $4.59 in January 2011 and $427.30 since inception. The Eco Friendly Gif Wrap netted $46.

Lauren plans to launch the Adopt-an-Animal Program on Valentine’s Day. All materials are ready to go except the window decal for the cages. Mary Helen motioned to accept the “Thank You for Adopting Me” themed decal. Jerry seconded. The motion was accepted unanimously.

The Winter Newsletter will be distributed before Valentine’s Day.

New Business:
The Citrus Harvest Festival is March 26 10am – 3:30(rain date April 2). The booth fee is $40. Mary Helen motioned to participate and submit fee for $40. The HEEC activity will be button making and promotion of the Adopt-an-Animal Program.

March 5 the Highland Library will make no-sew necktie aprons for the Adult Craft Program.

Director’s Report:
Lauren will gather eco-oriented incentives for the Adult Summer Reading Program. She will be requesting funding from HEEC at a later meeting.
The Highland Library will participate in the Oct 21 Great California Shakeout. In preparation to this 11:21 event, Lauren will run an emergency preparation workshop for adult earlier in the day.
October 28 and 29th is the library Haunted House. October 28 is the Disney Halloween from 3pm- 5pm.

Old Business:
Good Search has earned YTD 59.25. Earth Day is April 22. Library activities will mirror last year arrangement. Theme this year is Education on different animals. HEEC will be asked to pay for food for the presenters.
Discover Highland Night is October 23 4-8pm at Lowe’s parking lot. HEEC will have a booth.

New Business:
There is no new business.

The next meeting will be November 9 at 5:30pm at the Highland Library. This is one week late due to schedule conflicts.

A quorum was present. Andrea called the meeting to order at 5:39pm.

Meeting Minutes:
The March 2 minutes were emailed prior to the meeting. Copies were available at the meeting. Olivia motioned to accept the minutes. Mary Helen seconded. The updated minutes were approved.

Treasurer’s Report:
The Treasurer’s Report was read and filed for audit.

Director’s Report:
Lauren requested HEEC financial support for the upcoming Summer Reading program for adults June 14 – July 31. Prizes will include a compost bin, tools and a grand prize of a Nook and gift card for e-books. Olivia made a motion to provide a maximum of $300 for the ELC to purchase a Nook and gift card to give as a prize. Mary Helen seconded. The motion was approved unanimously.

Lauren thanked HEEC for using proceeds totaling $76.00 from the Highland Citrus Harvest Festival and upcoming Earth Week activities to pay for veterinary bills for the library’s sick snake. She reported that the snake had a respiratory infection that has been treated successfully.

Lauren invited members to view the new waste-to-energy exhibit in the ELC. This is a three part exhibit showing traditional landfill methods, an interactive activity, and a human bicycling activity to produce energy. This exhibit was the result of EPA Grant money.

Old Business:
Olivia reported Good Search for May: $5.01, YTD: $23.49, Total: $361.57.

Andrea estimated 1500 plus people attended Earth Week activities at the library. Earth Day count was 350-360. She reported that all events went smoothly. Expenses included $163.06 for vendor food and $18.64 for paint for tee shirts. We sold 10 shirts and received a limited number of recycled cans from the event. The Board discussed improvements to better promote Earth Week next year. They also discussed improvements to vendor meal offerings and presenter resources.

Andrea reported that Master Gardeners were successful in promoting the Adopt-a-Garden at Earth Week events. Five new applications were submitted. Three are being processed. She suggested next year we bring a speaker from the National Wildlife Federation to promote the Backyard Certification Program.

New Business:
Andrea recommended that we promote community sponsorships to expand support of larger ELC programs. She suggested ways to recognize our future sponsors—HEEC event poster, newsletter recognition, website spotlight and link. She will draft a solicitation letter for community partnerships to be available for the next Chamber of Commerce meeting.

Andrea will do final check on the Yahoo Small Business web hosting cost to update our website. Lauren and Andrea will maintain this site.

The meeting was adjourned at 6:50.

The scheduled June 2, 2009 meeting will not occur due to schedule conflicts. If necessary the board will do business by email and e-votes. The next formal meeting will be July 6 at 5:30pm at the Highland Library.

Director’s Report:
Lauren thanked Olivia for donating her Easy-up for HEEC activities. She reported that the design is ready for the large Earth Day Banner. The banner will be hung across Baseline for Earth Week.

The library will host a Summer Reading program for adults June 14 – July 31. Prizes will include a compost bin, tools and a grand prize of a Nook. A vote to fund prizes by HEEC will be tabled for a later date.

Lauren requested HEEC support to fund veterinarian visits for ELC snakes and to purchase light bulbs. Mary Helen motioned to pay for the veterinarian bill and light bulb purchases with fundraising proceeds from the Highland Citrus Harvest Festival and upcoming Earth Week activities. Andrea seconded. The motion was approved unanimously.

Old Business:
Good Search for April $1.16, YTD $19.16, since inceptions $357.24. The table at the Citrus Harvest Festival had 600 visitors. The kids loved the buttons. $1.25 in donations was netted at the event.

Members proofread and approved the HEEC Newsletter and Earth Day card.

New Business:
Earth Week is April 17 – 23. During this week ELC will have the kick off to the Adopt-a-Garden Program. Community participants who bring 20 recyclables to the event will be eligible to receive a prize. Watch for the press release for this and all events. Olivia will research sources and cost for HEEC to provide lunch for Earth Day presenters. Board members will have an email vote regarding the costs involved.

Treasurer’s Report:

Director’s Report:
Andrea and Lauren will represent the ELC on CSUSB Coyote Internet Radio. This is expected to air during Earth Week.

Lauren reported having gone solo in applying for an Edison grant for $25,000 for energy programs and materials. Jessica is now officially the Highland Branch manager. Lauren will take on expanded duties in the Environmental Learning Center.

Old Business:
As follow up to February 2 meeting there was an email vote to approve the purchase of shirts for Earth Week.

Olivia reported our GoodSearch YTD as 12.48 and lifetime total of $356.08.

Andrea reported that the Adopt-a-Garden sponsorship forms and follow-up inspection sheets will be ready for the Citrus Harvest Festival March 27. The Spring Edition of the HEEC Newsletter is still in progress.

Volunteers are needed for the Citrus Harvest Festival. The button maker is ready for the event once we have picture to color. Olivia will loan her easy up for the event. Members are asked to watch for a good product and price to purchase an HEEC easy up for future events. Big5 was suggested as a reasonable product that periodically goes on sale.

New Business:
Lauren recommended HEEC create Earth Day cards for Earth Week to send to supporters and others in the community. She would like the interns to work on this activity. Mary Helen motioned to approve Earth Day Cards for HEEC. Olivia seconded. The motion was carried.

Lauren emphasized that the $30 annual membership is the only charge for educators to use the teacher ELC kits for the year.
Andrea is requesting ideas for an annual membership drive event.

Director’s Report:
Jessica reported that bookings continue for Earth Week at the Highland Library. She and Lauren will represent the ELC on CSUSB Coyote Internet Radio March 4th.

Lauren reported having completed a survey for the National Wildlife Federation regarding our rooftop garden’s certification as a wildlife habitat. She passed information for Bubblology—the Science of Bubbles to perform at the Highland Library for Earth Week. Last meeting she was approved for up to $400 for entertainment. The cost is $350. Mary Helen motioned to approve Bubblology for entertainment. Jerry seconded. The motion was passed unanimously.

Old Business:
Andrea reported that the Adopt-a-Garden sponsorship forms and follow-up inspection sheets are near completion. Following discussion it was agreed to allow signage for sponsors. We will advertise March 1 as the start-up date for Adopt-a-Garden.

Membership incentives will be tabled for another meeting.

Two stations remain to be booked for the Earth Week at the Highland Library. Joe Green of Curiosity Quest has been booked as a guest speaker. Others booked include Enviroscaping , Composting, Trees to Please, a storm water display, an energy bus, and the reading of an environmental book. Sheila Kee will present her bird-watching book. Thompson Elementary will be bussing students to the event.

HEEC has 15 shirts remaining to sell at the event. Lauren will research the cost to purchase 15 more. She will email the results for an email vote to have them available for the event.

New Business:
ELC has purchased a Badge Maker. This will be the activity for the Citrus Harvest Festival. Lauren motioned to release $40 to apply for a table at the festival. Jerry seconded. The motion was approved unanimously.

Director’s Report:
Lauren reported that she and Jessica will represent the ELC on CSUSB Coyote Radio late March or early April. Universal Exhibits won the bids for the waste-to-energy exhibit. Lauren will scout the Performer Showcase for summer reading program entertainers. The summer theme will be water. A library grant will be supporting field trips for students at the Norton Aeronautic and Space Academy and another for the Field Program for Aging Adults. Lauren presented the sign for the National Wildlife Habitat Certificate for the Rooftop Garden. The “teacher” kit brochure has been broadened in scope to include all educators.

Mary Helen motioned to commit up to $400 to pay for entertainment for the summer reading program. Olivia seconded. The motion was approved unanimously.

Old Business:
Olivia reported Good Search has earned YTD $.84, 2009 $ 90.45 and a Total of $344.44. The Adopt-a-Garden brochure was presented. Christmas fundraisers were successful at Barnes & Noble and ELC.

Mary Helen motioned to spend $159.83 in donations from the events to pay for ELC animal feed. Jerry seconded. The motion was unanimously approved.

New Business:
Board discussed developing activities for April 22 Earth Day event at the library. There are plans but no firm commitments made for Chris Perlitz and Diane Ruiz for book signings, Lowe’s rooftop craft, and a possible keynote speaker.

Director’s Report:
Jessica was absent. Lauren presented the National Wildlife Habitat Certificate for the Rooftop Garden. We will receive the sign for display in the near future.

Old Business:
Mary Helen reported that she had deposited a check for $91.13 from Good Search. Keep using our fundraising search engine!

Andrea distributed Adopt-a-Garden flyers for review. The flyer incorporated ideas from sample flyers shown at the last meeting. Members were asked to review the flyer for suggestions and corrections.

The preliminary HEEC Newsletter was presented to the members. The final copy should be available next week.

The members reviewed a sample Chico Bag suggested as a membership incentive or possibly a future fundraiser. Issues discussed: brand name Chico bag vrs low cost alternatives, gift vrs. incentive to join, minimum quantities required, logo placement. More information needed for final decision. The decision was tabled for the next meeting.

The Barnes & Noble Bookfair Activity will be December 12 and 13 in Redlands. On December 12 Olivia plans a composting workshop at 11am and 4pm. Lauren will be selecting several books for a display table with signage. On Sunday December 13 HEEC will host an eco-friendly gift wrap and envelope activity from 10 am to 10pm. Andrea will be emailing a signup sheet to members for volunteer coverage.

New Business:
Andrea requested submissions for HEEC hosted workshops for 2010. She would like quarterly workshops. Suggestions included Olivia’s composting workshop - TBA. Chris Prelitz author of “Green Made Easy”- Andrea will arrange. Former Agriculture teacher at San Andreas High School- Jerry will contact for availability and topics. Author of bird watching book “Your Own Backyard for the Inland Empire” – Lauren will contact and coordinate.

Andrea presented an offer made to HEEC to allow advertising with links imbedded within our text on HEEC website as a fundraiser. Mary Helen motioned to reject offer. Lauren seconded. The vote was unanimous to reject this fundraiser.

Old Business:
Goodsearch has earned $52.48 this year. The Board reviewed the new membership application. Mary Helen will send this at renewal time for current members. It should be noted that we currently have new membership fees as listed.

Discover Highland Sept 26 broke up early due to weather and lack of participation. 70 people visited HEEC’s booth.

Andrea says HEEC will have an ATM card in 2 weeks! Lauren is waiting for this to apply for the National Wildlife Habit application and sign for our rooftop garden.

New Business:
The Eco Friendly Gift Wrap will be held Dec 19 at the Highland Library from 10 – 4.

Andrea requested HEEC letterhead for official communications. Mary Helen will search for existing letterhead from her files. It was suggested that we develop a coordinated look with our membership application, our newsletter and our letterhead.

Melissa suggested small reusable bags as an incentive for memberships. The decision was tabled for the November meeting.

Andrea requested Adopt a Garden projects. She suggested an Adopt a Garden program to allow for individuals or groups to help in the rooftop garden as this is very labor intensive. It was decided that further research is needed on guidelines for such a program. This will be presented at the November meeting.

Treasurer’s Report:
The Treasurer’s Report was read and filed for audit.

Director’s Report
Jessica announced that the ELC & library building have earned a Gold LEED Certification. This exceeded the goals and expectations of the architects. Expect future information regarding an event to highlight this accomplishment.

Old Business:
Goodsearch has earned $63.33 YTD and a total of $315.10. The HEEC website host has not changed. Our webmaster paid for renewal for another year with the old website host. Lauren signed ELC onto the Children and Nature Network to advertise ELC events. There is no cost to join.

Lauren presented material for the National Wildlife Federation Backyard Certification. ELC garden will likely meet and exceed criteria. Harriet motioned to apply and buy a sign to advertise once certified. Kara seconded. The motion was carried unanimously.

Barnes & Noble Book Sale is still on for Dec 12 and 13. Bookmarks with advertising will be available for Sept 26 Discover Highland Event. Eco Wrap for December 13 is still pending.

New Business:
Discover Highland Event will be Sept 26 1pm – 5pm. Andrea suggested an activity for the event where we create eco-envelope using a pattern, and old magazines and calendars. Kara motioned to share a table with Friends of the Library at a cost of $75. Harriet seconded. The motion was approved unanimously. Harriet motioned to do the envelope activity. Laren seconded. The motion was approved unanimously.

Andrea announced that the September HEEC Newsletter is in progress.

Next meeting will be Oct 6, 2009 at 5:30pm.

A quorum was present. Andrea called the meeting to order at 5:45 pm..

Meeting Minutes:
March minutes were e-mailed to everyone. Correction was requested on the wording for credit card to change to debit card. This change will be made to allow Mary Helen to obtain a debit card using April 7 minutes. Kara motioned for approval of amended minutes, Jerry seconded.

Treasurer’s Report:
The Treasurer’s Report was not read.

Director’s Report:
Lauren reported that May 30 will be birthday celebration for the Highland Library.

Old Business:
Lauren reported that Goodsearch has yielded $41.88 YTD and $293.65 total. Tee shirt sales at Earth Day did not hit breakeven point. Recycling netted $55.69.

No action will begin on web host change until Mary Helen has a HEEC debit card. Recommended change to the April minutes’ wording will facilitate this. Also no action will begin to change Bi-Laws until the complete version are found electronically or they are transcribed electronically. Melissa recommended we bring legal help to review our current bi-laws.

Two email votes were taken after the April 7 meeting. It was passed unanimous for HEEC to spend $50 to purchase energy efficient light bulbs to give as prizes at the Earth Day event. It was also passed unanimously to spend $50 for food and drink to show our appreciation by providing free food for those who have agreed to provide public education at ELC.

The Barnes & Noble Book Fair is set for December 12 and 13. The eco friendly gift wrap for December 13 is on hold with B & N at this time.

New Business:
Andrea and Melissa submitted changes to membership. Kara motioned to add Community Partner, Educators and Student as categories. Lauren seconded. Unanimously approved. Kara motioned to change pricing. Seconded by Jerry. Unanimously approved. The new pricing will be as follows:

Students $10, Seniors $10/ year, Individual $15/year, Family $20/yr, Educators $30/yr, Lifetime $150, and a new category Community Partner $250/yr. Jerry seconded. The motion was approved unanimously.

The Bi Laws will be changed to concur with these membership changes.

Next meeting will be June 2, 2009 at 5:30pm.

A quorum was present. Andrea called the meeting to order at 5:38 pm..

Meeting Minutes:
March minutes were e-mailed to everyone. Kara motioned for approval, Mary Helen seconded.

Treasurer’s Report:
The Treasurer’s Report was read by Mary Helen. The report was filed for audit.

Director’s Report:
Jessica reported that the HEEC Newsletter was distributed at the Citrus Harvest Festival, with the University of Redlands staff, and with the City Council.

May 15 a special story hour about endangered species at the Highland Library. Andrea requested a press release for this and the upcoming Earth Day event. May 20 is the Volunteer Recognition event.

Old Business:
Lauren reported that Good Search total is $289.47. We now have the data needed to switch web hosts. Lauren motioned for Mary Helen to apply for a HEEC credit card to meet the last remaining requirement to change over. Jerry seconded. The motion passed unanimously.

Bi-Law amendment vote will be tabled for the May meeting.

HEEC picked up the recycling at the Citrus Harvest Festival as another organization failed to do this earning $106.25. This will become HEEC ‘s role next year. Free face painting business was estimated at 500 participants. We sold four succulent plants.

New Business:
We will sell tee shirts at the April 22 Earth Day event at the Highland Library. Mary Helen motioned to 43 min tee at $101.59. Kara seconded. Unanimously approved.

Eco-friendly gift wrap and Book Fair at Barnes and Noble is planned for Dec 12 and 13 . Kara motioned to do a one day giftwrap on Dec 13 from 10am – 10pm. Mary Helen seconded. Unanimously carried.

Next meeting will be May 5, 2009 at 5:30pm.

Director’s Report:
Andrea announced developing plans for HEEC participation in the Highland Earth Day Expo. Participants who bring 20 or more cans for recycling will receive an eco-friendly prize. The Expo event will take place April 22.

Old Business:
Lauren reported that Good Search total is $270.70.

New Business:
Options are being reviewed for and change in web hosting. Andrea will offer these to webmaster Bill Alves for more input. The issue will be tabled for vote in the April meeting.

The HEEC Newsletter was available for review. The newsletter will be sent four times per year March, June, September and December.

Next meeting will be April 7, 2009 at 5:30pm.

December minutes were e-mailed to everyone. Kara motioned for approval, Mary Helen seconded.

Treasurer’s Report:
The Treasurer’s Report was read by Mary Helen. The report was filed for audit.

Director’s Report:
HEEC will partner with the city of Highland to participate in the Highland Earth Day Expo. This is currently in the planning stage. The Expo event will take place April 22.

Old Business:
Lauren reported that Good Search total will be forthcoming in an email update. Kara will continue to research a Facebook or other alternatives for a more user-friendly HEEC presence online.

The December Eco-Friendly Gift Wrap Fundraiser netted $124. The Board agreed to seek out a better location and better promotion to build on this success.

New Business:
The next HEEC Newsletter will be available for review at the March meeting. The newsletter will be sent four times per year March, June, September and December.

Bi-laws were discussed in regards to changing the week of HEEC meetings. Mary Helen motioned to change the meeting from the third Tuesday to the first Tuesday beginning March 3. Jerry seconded. The motion was approved unanimously.

Next meeting will be March 3, 2009 at 5:30pm.
